Etterbeek is where the EU institutions meet residential Brussels. The European Parliament, the European Commission (Berlaymont building), and the European Council are all within walking distance or a short metro ride. This proximity draws thousands of EU officials, lobbyists, journalists, and diplomats who choose to live near their workplace. Place Jourdan — with its cafes, frites stands, and terraces — functions as the EU Quarter's unofficial after-work gathering spot.
The Parc du Cinquantenaire (Jubelpark) is Etterbeek's — and arguably Brussels' — greatest park. The 30-hectare space features the monumental Triumphal Arch, three museums (Royal Museum of the Armed Forces, Autoworld, Art & Histoire), formal gardens, open lawns, and a large children's playground. Weekend picnics, jogging, and casual football on the lawns are community traditions.
Etterbeek is exceptionally well-connected by public transport. Metro stations at Merode, Schuman, and Thieffry provide access to Lines 1 and 5, connecting to the city centre (De Brouckere, 10 minutes), the Gare du Midi (15 minutes for Eurostar/Thalys), and eastern communes. Tram and bus routes supplement the metro.
Place Jourdan is Etterbeek's dining and social hub — a square surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and the famous Maison Antoine frites stand (regularly voted Brussels' best). The dining scene is international: Italian, Greek, Thai, Japanese, Belgian brasseries, and wine bars. The Thursday evening market on Place Jourdan adds fresh produce and street food to the mix.
Etterbeek sits in the urban core of Brussels and experiences a slight urban heat island effect — marginally warmer than the suburban communes in summer and less exposed to wind in winter. The Parc du Cinquantenaire provides a green buffer that moderates temperatures in the immediate vicinity, making park-adjacent streets particularly pleasant in summer.
