District XI is Budapest's most populous district and one of its most diverse. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) campus brings an academic and youthful energy. A well-established Chinese community, centered around the Kőbányai út area and Four Tigers Market, adds a distinct Asian cultural layer. The district ranges from dense urban areas near the Danube to quieter residential zones toward the Buda Hills, creating diverse sub-neighborhoods within one district.
Gellért Hill is the district's most dramatic green space — a wooded hillside rising above the Danube with hiking trails and Budapest's best panoramic views. The Feneketlen-tó (Bottomless Lake) park near BME is a peaceful urban oasis with a small lake, playground, and running path. Kopaszi Gát, a reclaimed peninsula on the Danube's southern edge, has been transformed into a modern waterfront park with restaurants and promenades.
District XI has improving public transport with several key connections. Tram 19 and 41 run along the Danube embankment connecting to the Buda Castle area. Tram 4/6 is accessible at Móricz Zsigmond körtér, the district's main transport hub. The M4 Metro line stops at Móricz Zsigmond körtér and Szent Gellért tér, providing fast access to central Pest. Several bus routes serve the hillside areas. The BudaPart development area now has improved tram connections.
Móricz Zsigmond körtér is the district's commercial center with a mix of shops, cafés, and services. The Allee Shopping Center on Október huszonharmadika utca is a modern mall with supermarkets, fashion stores, and a cinema. The district has numerous Asian grocery stores and markets, particularly in the Kelenföld area, offering excellent ingredients for home cooking. Lidl, Aldi, and Spar supermarkets are well-distributed throughout.
District XI's climate varies by location within the district. The Danube embankment areas are influenced by river breezes, while the Gellért Hill area has its own microclimate with better air quality and slightly different temperatures. The flat areas near Kelenföld experience standard Pest-side continental conditions. Summers are warm to hot (27-34°C) and winters cold (-3 to 4°C).
