Iskandar Puteri is the most internationally diverse area in Johor Bahru. The development of Iskandar Malaysia as a special economic zone attracted international schools, which in turn drew Korean, Japanese, British, and Australian families. Many households have one parent commuting to Singapore and the other managing life locally. The Korean community is particularly visible, with Korean restaurants, churches, and hagwons (tuition centres) clustered around Medini and Nusajaya.
Iskandar Puteri was master-planned with generous green corridors. East Ledang features tree-lined boulevards and a central lake with jogging paths. Kota Iskandar, the administrative centre, has landscaped grounds open to the public for evening walks. The Pulai River mangrove area on the western edge offers kayaking and nature walks, a surprisingly wild escape just minutes from suburban development.
Iskandar Puteri is spread over a large area and a car is essential for daily life. Roads are wide and modern, with significantly less congestion than central JB. The Second Link bridge to Singapore is nearby, offering an alternative to the congested Causeway — crossing times are more predictable, typically 30-45 minutes to Tuas. Many expat families keep a car on each side of the border.
Mall of Medini and AEON Bukit Indah (15 min drive) handle most shopping needs. Several Korean and Japanese grocery stores stock imported ingredients for the expat community. The Giant hypermarket at Nusajaya is good for bulk shopping. Fresh produce is cheapest at the local wet markets, where a week''s worth of fruit and vegetables costs under RM 50.
Like all of Johor, Iskandar Puteri has a hot and humid tropical climate with minimal seasonal variation. Temperatures sit between 31-33C during the day and 23-25C at night, every month. Humidity averages 80-85%, and afternoon thunderstorms are almost daily, particularly during the northeast monsoon from November to March. The area gets slightly more breeze than inland JB due to its proximity to the Strait of Johor.
