Lamai is Samui''s second-largest beach area, attracting a different crowd than Chaweng. The community skews older and more settled — long-term European retirees (many German, Scandinavian, and British), Thai-Western couples, and families who prefer Lamai''s quieter pace over Chaweng''s commercial bustle. Thai residents include fishing families from the original village at the southern end of Lamai Beach, as well as workers in the growing resort and restaurant sector. There is a noticeable Russian community, reflected in Cyrillic signage along parts of the beach road.
Lamai Beach is a beautiful 4-kilometer stretch with generally calmer conditions than Chaweng. The central section has the best swimming, while the rocky ends offer snorkeling. The Overlap Stone viewpoint on the hill between Lamai and Chaweng rewards a short hike with panoramic bay views. The interior jungle around Na Muang waterfalls (two cascades, easily accessible) is a popular family adventure. The southern end near the grandfather rocks has tide pools that children enjoy exploring.
Lamai sits on the southeast coast, about 20 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from Nathon pier via the ring road. The main beach road runs parallel to the shore with restaurants and shops, while the ring road provides the faster route around the island. The road between Lamai and Chaweng passes over a hilly stretch with sharp curves — drive carefully, especially at night or in rain.
Lamai has a mid-sized Tesco Lotus Express and numerous convenience stores along the beach road. A fresh morning market operates daily near the main junction with produce, seafood, and Thai prepared food. For full grocery shopping, the Makro and Central Festival in Chaweng are 15-20 minutes away. Several small Western-oriented shops stock imported items at premium prices. The Sunday afternoon market adds variety with street food, clothing, and crafts.
Excellent conditions with 26-33C, low humidity, and calm seas perfect for snorkeling and swimming. The southeast-facing beach gets morning sun and afternoon shade from the hills. Peak tourist season brings more activity to the beach road.
