Maenam is the quietest major beach area on Samui''s north coast, popular with families and long-stay expats who want island life without tourist-strip intensity. The community includes a significant French expat contingent (several French restaurants and a French-speaking social circle), British and Australian long-stayers, and Thai families from the original fishing and coconut-farming community. Chinese-Thai shophouse families in the village center trace their roots back several generations. Maenam has a lower turnover of residents than Chaweng or Lamai, creating a more stable community feel.
Maenam Beach is a 5-kilometer stretch of golden sand, generally less crowded than Chaweng or Bophut. The shallow, calm waters are excellent for families with young children. Beach volleyball nets appear on weekends. The hilly interior behind Maenam offers jungle trails through coconut groves and rubber plantations, with occasional viewpoints over the bay. Secret Buddha Garden in the highlands above Maenam is a magical hillside sculpture garden reached by 4WD or a challenging hike.
Maenam is on the north coast, roughly 20 minutes from Samui Airport and 15 minutes from Nathon pier. The ring road connects to all other beach areas. The village is compact enough that a motorbike suffices for most daily errands, but a car is useful for trips to Chaweng shopping (20 minutes) or Lamai (30 minutes). Roads through the interior hills are steep and winding.
Maenam village has a daily morning market that is one of Samui''s best — fresh seafood, tropical fruit, Thai curries, and coconut desserts at local prices. A Tesco Lotus Express and several convenience stores handle basics. A few small Western-oriented shops stock imported items. For larger shopping, Central Festival Chaweng is 20 minutes away. The Thursday walking street adds weekly variety.
Beautiful conditions with 26-33C, low humidity, and calm seas. Maenam''s north-facing beach catches cooling breezes. This is the best time for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The bay is glassy-calm on many mornings, ideal for kayaking.
