It has the most authentic Thai town feel on the island, with a morning market, government offices, banks, and the island's main hospital. Nathon is Samui''s administrative capital and main port town, with a predominantly Thai population. Unlike the tourist beach areas, Nathon functions as a working town — government offices, the main hospital, banks, and the ferry terminal are all here. The small expat community consists mainly of budget-conscious long-stayers, retirees who prefer authentic Thai life over resort culture, and some teachers. Thai residents are a mix of long-established families, government workers, and merchants running the shophouse businesses along the waterfront.
Nathon''s beach is a narrow strip along the west coast, more suited to sunset walks than swimming. The waterfront promenade offers pleasant evening strolls with views to the Ang Thong islands. The hills behind town have informal trails through coconut and rubber plantations. The pier area is an enjoyable spot for watching ferry activity and fishing boats.
Nathon''s defining transport feature is the main car ferry pier. Seatran and Raja ferries connect to Don Sak on the Surat Thani mainland (1.5-2 hours), providing the cheapest way to get vehicles and cargo on and off the island. The night ferry to Surat Thani town is popular for budget travelers connecting to trains and buses.
Nathon has the island''s most comprehensive local shopping outside of Chaweng. A large daily fresh market operates near the pier with excellent seafood, fruit, and Thai prepared foods at the lowest prices on Samui. The main shopping street has hardware stores, clothing shops, pharmacies, and household goods — all at local (non-tourist) prices. A Tesco Lotus Express and Big C cover supermarket needs. The waterfront cafes and a few Western restaurants cater to diverse tastes.
Nathon''s west coast position means stunning sunsets but a different weather feel than the east coast. Clear skies, 26-33C, and calm seas make the waterfront promenade especially pleasant. The dry season coincides with less ferry traffic as tourist numbers peak on the east coast.
