Stare Miasto (Old Town) is the historic heart of Krakow, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The resident population is a mix of older Polish families who have lived here for generations, young professionals in converted apartments, and a growing number of international residents drawn by the city's cultural magnetism. Foreign residents include academics at Jagiellonian University, tech workers from the growing Krakow IT sector, and artists. The area has become increasingly tourist-heavy, which has pushed some long-term residents to quieter districts, but a committed community remains within the Planty ring.
The Planty, a 4-kilometer ring of gardens encircling the Old Town where the medieval walls once stood, is Krakow's defining green space. Benches, fountains, and mature trees make it a popular spot for morning jogs, afternoon strolls, and children's play. Within the Old Town, small squares and courtyards provide intimate green pockets. The Vistula riverbank (Bulwary Wislane), a short walk south, has been beautifully developed with cycling and walking paths, outdoor cafes, and seasonal cultural events.
The Old Town is one of Europe's most walkable city centers. The entire district within the Planty ring is pedestrianized or low-traffic. Most daily needs — shops, restaurants, schools, medical facilities — are within a 15-minute walk. Cobblestone streets can be challenging with strollers and wheelchairs.
Galeria Krakowska, a modern shopping mall adjacent to the train station, houses a large Carrefour supermarket and dozens of shops. Within the Old Town, smaller grocery stores (Zabka, Biedronka Express) handle daily needs. The Stary Kleparz market just north of the Planty is a beloved daily produce market with fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and flowers at reasonable prices. Specialty food shops along Grodzka and Szewska offer artisan breads, cheeses, and Polish delicacies.
Krakow's spring arrives gradually with temperatures rising from 5-10C in March to 15-22C by May. The Planty gardens bloom beautifully, and outdoor cafe season begins in April. Occasional rain showers are common. Spring is considered the most pleasant season for exploring the Old Town on foot.
