Sempione draws a diverse mix of young Italian families, creative professionals, and a notable Chinese-Italian community centred on Via Paolo Sarpi. The neighbourhood has a more relaxed, bohemian energy than the fashion-focused Quadrilatero or the corporate Porta Nuova. Apartments range from grand Umbertino-era flats with high ceilings to more modest post-war buildings, creating economic diversity that is increasingly rare in central Milan.
Sempione's identity is inseparable from its park. Parco Sempione is a 47-hectare green lung stretching from the Castello Sforzesco to the Arco della Pace, and it is the most popular family gathering spot in central Milan. The park has multiple playgrounds, including a large adventure playground near the Acquario Civico with climbing frames, swings, and sandpits. Wide gravel paths are perfect for cycling, scootering, and buggy walks. On sunny weekends, the lawns fill with families, joggers, and picnickers.
Sempione is well-served by public transport. Cadorna station, on the southern edge, connects Metro Lines 1 (red) and 2 (green) with the Malpensa Express train to the airport. Moscova station on Line 2 serves the eastern side. Tram lines 1, 4, and 19 cross the district, providing direct connections to the Duomo, Porta Nuova, and the university area. The central location means most destinations in Milan are reachable within 15-20 minutes.
The Mercato Comunale Wagner, a short tram ride south on Viale Monte Rosa, is one of Milan's best indoor markets — a covered hall with fishmongers, butchers, cheese vendors, produce stalls, and prepared food counters. Esselunga on Via Washington is the nearest full-size supermarket. Via Paolo Sarpi (Chinatown) offers an extraordinary range of Asian groceries, noodle shops, and tea houses at very low prices, which many expat families discover and incorporate into their weekly shopping routine.
Sempione summers follow the Milanese pattern of hot, humid conditions. The park offers significant shade relief from the urban heat, and families shift their routines to mornings and evenings during July and August. The large open lawns can be uncomfortably hot at midday but become pleasant after 6pm. Thunderstorms are common in late afternoon, providing temporary cooling. The Acquario and Triennale offer air-conditioned retreat options.
