Escazu is the undisputed hub of expat life in Costa Rica — a prosperous, cosmopolitan suburb that has attracted the largest concentration of American and international residents in the country. The city is often called the Beverly Hills of Central America, though that characterization belies its genuine warmth and livability. Escazu blends modern commercial infrastructure — international restaurants, luxury malls, top private hospitals — with charming colonial-era barrios in Old Escazu (Escazu Centro and San Miguel). The American Club, active church communities, and numerous expat associations provide a robust social infrastructure. International schools of every curriculum — American, British, French, Montessori — cluster in and around Escazu, making it the default choice for families.
Escazu offers excellent recreational options for an urban suburb. The hills above the city provide hiking and mountain biking on trails with stunning Central Valley views. La Sabana Metropolitan Park — Costa Ricas largest urban park — is accessible from Escazu and features sports facilities, an art museum, and a large lagoon. Parque La Radial in Escazu itself is a pleasant neighborhood green space. The Multiplaza and Avenida Escazu developments include entertainment complexes. Yoga, CrossFit, and tennis clubs are abundant. Serious hikers access Cerro Escazu for panoramic views.
Escazu sits just west of central San Jose with good road connections, but traffic can be severe during rush hours on the main Prospero Fernandez Highway. Uber is abundant and reliable — most expats use it as their primary transport. The Pan-American Highway provides easy access to the airport (30 minutes in off-peak traffic) and Pacific coast. A car is highly recommended for families with school runs and weekend trips. Local buses to downtown San Jose run frequently. Escazus walkability within its commercial zones is reasonable — several blocks of shops, restaurants, and services are accessible on foot.
Daily life in Escazu is comfortable and fully bilingual. PriceSmart (Costco equivalent), AutoMercado, and Walmart serve grocery needs with a wide range of imported products. The Multiplaza Escazu mall hosts international chains, a cinema, and food court. Medical care is world-class at CIMA Hospital — Costa Ricas leading private hospital, with international-trained doctors accepting US insurance. The concentration of international schools makes Escazu the practical choice for families. Banking, legal, and financial services cater to expats in English. Farmers markets run on Saturdays with organic produce and artisanal goods.
Escazu sits at around 1,200 meters in the Central Valley, giving it the famously pleasant Costa Rican highland climate. Days are typically 22–28°C with mild evenings around 16–18°C. The rainy season (May–November) brings daily afternoon downpours, but mornings are reliably sunny. Microclimates within Escazu vary — higher elevations can be noticeably cooler and foggier. No heating or air conditioning is typically needed, making Escazu one of the most comfortable year-round climates for temperate-zone expats.
