Shanghai's most charming neighbourhood, with tree-lined streets, Art Deco architecture, independent cafes, and a bohemian-cosmopolitan atmosphere. The former French Concession attracts expat families who want cultural depth, walkability, and character over suburban convenience. Popular with European and creative-industry families.

The Former French Concession — spanning parts of Xuhui and Jingan districts — is the most beloved and romantic neighborhood in Shanghai: a tree-lined enclave of plane trees, Art Deco villas, chic boutiques, and world-class restaurants that recalls the cosmopolitan Shanghai of the 1920s and 1930s. The FFC, as its universally known, is Shanghais premier address for foreign residents who prioritize lifestyle, culture, and aesthetics. The main axes — Huaihai Road, Wukang Road, Fuxing Road, and their connecting lanes (longtangs) — are famous for their European character and the overlay of contemporary Shanghai cool. The concentration of independent cafes, artisan boutiques, wine bars, and exceptional restaurants makes the FFC the most competitive dining and lifestyle destination in China.
The FFCs greatest park is its own streets — the leafy plane-tree canopy creates a natural promenade throughout the neighborhood. Fuxing Park, a French-era public garden with rose gardens and outdoor dance, is the neighborhoods green heart. The Xuhui Riverside arts district provides cultural recreation along the Huangpu. Several high-end gyms and the Kerry Sports Centre serve the fitness community. Cycling through the FFCs lanes is a pleasure. Shanghais museum and gallery scene is concentrated nearby in Peoples Square and the Bund area.
The FFC is well-connected by Metro Lines 1, 9, 10, and 12. The Hengshan Road and Jiashan Road stations sit within the neighborhood. Didi is fast and cheap. Many residents cycle or walk within the neighborhood — its compact, flat layout makes this genuinely practical. The Bund is 20 minutes by Metro or Didi. Pudong Airport is 45 minutes via Metro Line 9 or 60 minutes by Didi. Hongqiao is 35 minutes by Metro.
Daily life in the FFC is the finest urban experience in China. City Super, Fresh Mart, and specialty importers supply everything from French cheeses to Japanese wagyu. The restaurant scene is genuinely world-class — Paul Pairets Ultraviolet, Willy Trullas Morenos El Willy, and dozens of other global standouts are within walking distance. International medical care at Jiahui International Hospital and Shanghai United Family Hospital is excellent. French, American, and German schools serve expat families. The concentration of galleries, wine bars, and cultural venues gives FFC a lifestyle density rivaling any global city neighborhood.
The FFC shares Shanghais humid subtropical climate. The plane tree canopy provides crucial summer shade, making the neighborhood noticeably more pleasant in July and August than the exposed Bund or Pudong areas. Winters are damp and cold (2–8°C), with no central heating in many older lane houses — a surprising shock for new arrivals. Spring brings spectacular blooms on the plane trees and wisteria. The trees also create a spectacular golden canopy in November.
