Shekou (Shekou Peninsula) has been Shenzhen's original and most established expat community since the 1980s, when it was China's first Special Economic Zone industrial hub. Today it is a cosmopolitan, family-friendly enclave with a long-standing Western expat presence anchored by international schools, churches, and community organizations.
Shekou is bordered by the sea and has pleasant waterfront promenades along the peninsula coast. Nanhai Park and several smaller green spaces provide walking and exercise areas. The nearby Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches (30-45 min drive) are popular for weekend outings.
Shekou is served by Metro Line 2 (Sea World and Shekou Port stations) with connections to central Shenzhen in about 30 minutes. The Shekou Ferry Terminal offers fast ferries to Hong Kong Airport and central HK -- a major convenience for frequent travelers.
Shekou has some of Shenzhen's best international food options -- Western restaurants, international supermarkets (Ole, Taste), and a lively Sea World bar and dining strip. The Coastal City and Sea World squares have cafes, cinemas, and retail.
Shekou shares Shenzhen's subtropical monsoon climate but benefits from the peninsula's sea breezes, which temper summer humidity somewhat. Summers (June-September) are hot (32-35 C) with high humidity and typhoon risk.
