Pakuwon City is one of Indonesias most ambitious mixed-use township developments — a 750-hectare planned community in east Surabaya built around a large central lake and anchored by the Pakuwon Trade Center, which claims to be one of Asias largest integrated commercial complexes. The development has attracted upper-middle and upper-class Indonesian families, a growing Chinese-Indonesian community, and increasingly, expatriate families drawn by the self-contained infrastructure, international schools, and modern apartment and villa options. The Pakuwon Trade Center complex provides retail, entertainment, dining, and hotel facilities all under one roof or within the development. The township has a sense of scale and ambition that few Indonesian residential developments match.
Pakuwon Citys central lake is the recreational centerpiece — a large artificial lake with cycling and walking paths around its perimeter, water activities, and scenic viewpoints. The townships park network provides jogging routes. The Sports City area has tennis courts and sports facilities. Several compounds within the township have private pools. The Pakuwon Trade Center complex has a large entertainment zone including cinema, bowling, and indoor activities for all weathers.
Pakuwon City is in east Surabaya, which places it on the opposite side of the city from the western planned developments. The drive to the city center takes 25–35 minutes. Gojek and Grab operate throughout. A car is necessary for most residents. The Suramadu Bridge to Madura island is accessible from the eastern areas. The airport (Juanda) is 35–45 minutes south by toll road. Within the township, everything is within driving or cycling distance.
Life in Pakuwon City revolves around the Pakuwon Trade Center complex, which contains supermarkets (Pakuwon Food Festival, Ranch Market), restaurants of every variety, entertainment, and retail all within the development. International food options are comprehensive. Healthcare at the Siloam Hospitals Surabaya (within the development) is excellent for Indonesian standards. The townships self-contained nature means residents can go days without leaving — a feature and a limitation simultaneously.
Pakuwon City shares Surabayas tropical climate — hot and humid year-round. The townships east-facing position receives the sea breeze from the Madura Strait somewhat more directly than the western suburbs, providing marginal cooling on some afternoons. The large lake within the development creates a microclimate that is slightly cooler and more pleasant than the surrounding urban areas. Wet season flooding has affected parts of Pakuwon City historically — residents choose higher precincts.
