Mirzo Ulugbek has transformed from a quiet academic district into one of Tashkent's most dynamic neighborhoods. The opening of IT Park Tashkent in 2019 brought a wave of tech companies and startups, attracting young professionals from across Uzbekistan and a growing number of international workers. The district is named after the 15th-century astronomer-king, and that legacy of learning continues with Tashkent International University and several research institutes nearby.
The district sits adjacent to the Botanical Garden of Uzbekistan, a 66-hectare oasis with over 4,500 plant species that serves as the neighborhood's primary green escape. Families gather here on weekends for picnics under walnut trees, and it is one of the few places in Tashkent where you can walk for an hour without crossing a road.
Mirzo Ulugbek station on the Uzbekiston metro line provides a direct connection to central Tashkent in about 15 minutes. The metro is cheap (about $0.10 per ride), clean, and reliable, making it the best option for commuters heading downtown. Buses and shared taxis (marshrutkas) fill in the gaps, though routes can be confusing for newcomers.
Daily life in Mirzo Ulugbek blends Soviet-era routine with Tashkent's modernization push. Mornings start with fresh non (bread) from neighborhood tandoor ovens, and many residents shop daily at small bazaars for produce, dairy, and meat. The larger Qoyliq bazaar on the district's edge is where families stock up on everything from spices to household goods at local prices.
Mirzo Ulugbek shares Tashkent's continental climate with dramatic seasonal swings. Summers from June through August are hot and dry, with temperatures regularly hitting 38-42C and occasional dust haze from the surrounding steppe. Air conditioning is essential and now standard in newer buildings, though older Soviet-era apartments may lack it.
