Vienna's southernmost district combines suburban tranquillity with surprisingly good infrastructure. Newer residential developments in Alt-Erlaa and Atzgersdorf offer spacious, affordable apartments with excellent public transport links. Families are drawn by the lower rents, large parks, and the relaxed pace — a contrast to the bustle of inner districts.

Liesing is Viennas southernmost district — a largely suburban and semi-industrial area that has evolved into a pleasant family-oriented residential zone with excellent transport links to the city center. The district combines older residential areas like Atzgersdorf with the upscale Rodaun area near the Vienna Woods, and the more industrial Inzersdorf. The Liesing stream provides a green corridor through the district. For expats, Liesing offers more space and lower rents than inner-city districts, combined with good U-Bahn access. The community is predominantly Austrian and distinctly suburban in character.
Liesings most notable recreational asset is its proximity to the Wienerwald. The forest begins at the districts western and southern edges, offering extensive hiking. The Naturschutzgebiet Liesing provides a protected nature corridor within the district. Hiking to the Maurer Wald and beyond into the Vienna Hills is accessible on foot or by tram from Rodaun. The Biedermeier-era vineyards of Rodaun and Kalksburg maintain a small wine-growing tradition. A newer sports complex serves the residential community.
Liesing has excellent U-Bahn access via the U6 line, which runs through the district north to south, connecting to Westbahnhof and the inner city. The Liesing S-Bahn (suburban rail) station connects to the southern commuter rail network. Buses cover the areas between the rail stations. A car is useful for Wienerwald excursions and the southern parts of the district not well-served by public transit. The airport is 35 minutes by a combination of U6 and CAT or by car.
Daily life in Liesing is comfortable and affordable by Vienna standards. Billa, Spar, and Hofer (Aldi equivalent) supermarkets are plentiful throughout the district. The Liesing shopping center provides comprehensive retail. Local bakeries, butchers, and the occasional farmers market supplement the supermarket offer. The districts Beisl restaurants serve traditional Viennese and Austrian cuisine at reasonable prices. Healthcare at the Hietzing Hospital is accessible. Liesings lower rents and suburban spaciousness make it increasingly attractive for young families who want Viennas infrastructure without the premium of the inner districts.
Liesings southern position at the foot of the Wienerwald gives it a slightly cooler and greener character than the inner city. Winters are cold (0–5°C) with more reliable snowfall than downtown. The Wienerwald channels fresh air into the southern district. Summer temperatures are slightly moderated by the forested hills to the west. The overall climate is Viennas continental type — four clear seasons with cold winters and warm summers.
