Küsnacht is the epicentre of the Zurich Gold Coast and one of Switzerlands wealthiest municipalities. Residents include senior banking executives, hedge fund founders, tech entrepreneurs, and established international families who have chosen Küsnacht for its combination of prestige, excellent schools, and lakeside beauty. The Zurich International School (ZIS) lower school campus in Küsnacht anchors a large English-speaking community. This was Carl Jungs home for over 60 years.
Küsnachts lakefront is its crown jewel. The Strandbad Küsnacht is a beautifully maintained public bathing area with swimming pools, a childrens splash zone, diving boards, and a restaurant terrace overlooking the lake. The Küsnacht harbour is home to the Ruderclub and several sailing clubs, with youth sailing courses available in summer. The lakeside promenade extends north toward Zollikon and south toward Erlenbach, offering continuous walking and cycling along the Gold Coast.
Küsnacht is served by two S-Bahn stations — Küsnacht and Küsnacht Goldbach — on the S6 and S16 lines, providing direct trains to Zurich Stadelhofen (10 minutes) and Hauptbahnhof (15 minutes) every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. The railway runs along the lake, making the commute scenic and reliable. Zurich Airport is reachable in 30 minutes with one change at Stadelhofen.
The Dorfplatz and surrounding streets have a Coop supermarket, a Volg, an excellent bakery (Bäckerei Steiner), a butcher, a cheese shop, and several specialty food stores. The selection is good for a village of this size, reflecting the affluent clientele. For larger shopping, the Seefeld district in Zurich or the Stadelhofen area is a short S-Bahn ride away. A weekly market on Wednesday mornings offers fresh produce, flowers, and regional specialties.
The Gold Coast earns its name from the exceptional sun exposure — Küsnachts east-facing lakeshore catches morning light, and the open aspect means sunshine from dawn until the sun sets behind the Üetliberg across the lake. Summer temperatures reach 25-28C with comfortable humidity. The Strandbad is the social centre from June through September. Evening dining on lakeside terraces with views of sunset-lit water is a quintessential Küsnacht experience.
