International Community School of Addis Ababa

ICS does not provide a bus service. Many families live in the Old Airport neighborhood and drive their children to school, or hire a driver. Some families may walk to school and older students sometimes ride their bicycles to school.

ICS does not have a school uniform. Students in middle and high school (grades 6-12) are expected to follow the ICS dress code. Students in grades 6-10 must purchase ICS shorts and a t-shirt for their physical education (PE) classes.

Early childhood classes have a maximum of 16 students, with a primary teacher and a teaching assistant. Kindergarten classes have a maximum of 18 students, with a primary teacher and a teaching assistant. Grade 1 classes have a maximum of 20 students, with a primary teacher and a teaching assistant. Grade 2 classes have a maximum of 22 students, with a primary teacher and a teaching assistant. Grades 3-5 have a maximum of 24 students, with a primary teacher and a teaching assistant. Middle and high school classes have a maximum of 24 students. Some classes may be smaller, especially in the high school, due to the range of class options available.

ICS boasts excellent technology facilities and it is constantly aiming to improve them. ICS has a dedicated Makerspace and Roboitcs Lab, located in its new building, which is used by students in all grades. Individual classrooms are all equipped with technology tools. All elementary classrooms have desktop computers as well as SmartBoards, document cameras, printers, etc. Secondary classrooms each have a projectors, and shared access to document cameras and networked printers. Some secondary classrooms have SmartBoards and ICS is expanding their use throughout the school. ICS has shared resources that are used throughout the school: several sets of laptops and iPads which classes can check out, as well as other resources (cameras, projectors, etc.) that can be checked out by teachers. ICS' campus-wide network gives all students and teachers access to the internet, and ICS has a dedicated guest network for parents and community members.

The percentage of children from the international community should be at least 95% of the enrollment in any grade level in the early childhood and elementary, 90% of the enrollment in any grade level in the middle school, and 85% of the enrollment in any grade level in the high school. The overall percentage of spaces for children from the international community should be at least 90% schoolwide.

After school activities are available for students in grade 1 through grade 12 and include clubs, activities and athletics.

ICS students in all age groups (U12, U14, U16, U19) have the opportunity to compete in the eight school local league (ISSAAA) in Addis Ababa. Local schools compete in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Track & Field and Cross-Country.

Sports pavilion: there are four spaces that can be used simultaneously, for sports such as basketball, tennis, volleyball. Outdoor soccer pitch, sports track, outdoor basketball court.

Spanish, French Students fluent in a language other than English may be able to join ICS' Mother Tongue Maintenance Program, which runs for one hour on Wednesday afternoons. Mother tongue groups are run by parent volunteers, and ICS usually has about 20 different groups.

Learning Support can provide an appropriate education for most students, including non-native English speakers, students with mild to moderate learning disabilities and highly capable students. However, because of the limitations of the local professional support network, ICS is not able to serve the educational needs of those students with more serious mental, physical, emotional or learning disabilities. The campus is also not handicapped accessible.
