Herastrau attracts a mix of established expat families and affluent Romanians who prioritise green space and a quieter lifestyle over nightlife proximity. The community includes corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals working in Bucharest's growing tech and finance sectors. Families with younger children are especially well represented, drawn by the park lifestyle and proximity to international schools.
The defining feature of the neighbourhood is direct access to Bucharest's premier park. The 187-hectare park wraps around a large lake and offers jogging trails, cycling paths, rowboat and pedal boat rentals, multiple playgrounds, and open lawns for picnics. The park is well maintained and safe, with lighting along main paths for evening walks and runs.
Aviatorilor station on the M2 line is the closest metro stop, accessible from the southern end of the neighbourhood. Buses and trolleybuses run along Soseaua Nordului and Bulevardul Beijing, connecting to Piata Victoriei and the city centre. However, the area north of the park is less well served by public transport, and many residents depend on cars.
Baneasa Shopping City, one of Bucharest's premier malls, is a 10-minute drive north with a Carrefour hypermarket, food court, cinema, and international brands. Closer to home, Mega Image stores and a small Profi market handle daily needs. Weekend farmers markets in and around the park sell local honey, cheese, fresh bread, and seasonal fruits.
The proximity to the large lake and extensive tree canopy creates a marginally cooler microclimate compared to Bucharest's concrete centre. Temperatures still reach 30-35C, but evening breezes off the lake make outdoor dining pleasant. Summer thunderstorms can be intense — the park's paths flood briefly during heavy downpours but drain quickly. Mosquitoes near the lake can be a nuisance in July and August.
