Fiesole has attracted foreign residents for centuries — the Medici and other Florentine nobles built their summer villas here, and by the 19th century it was a favoured retreat for British and American writers, artists, and academics. Today the community includes wealthy Italians in hillside villas, diplomats posted to Florence, academics connected to the European University Institute in nearby San Domenico, and long-term expat families drawn by the international schools and quality of life.
Fiesole is a gateway to excellent hiking. The trail from Piazza Mino down through olive groves to San Domenico and onward to Florence is a classic walk. The hills above town lead into chestnut and cypress forests with marked paths toward Monte Ceceri, where Leonardo da Vinci reportedly tested his flying machine. The Mugnone valley offers gentler walks through farmland and vineyards.
ATAF bus 7 runs from Fiesole Piazza Mino to Florence San Marco square approximately every 20 minutes, taking 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. This is the primary public transport link. The bus is reliable but can be crowded during school run hours. Some families time their commute around the bus schedule; others combine bus and walking.
Fiesole has a small supermarket (Coop) in the village, plus a butcher, baker, and a couple of alimentari for daily basics. A weekly market in the piazza sells fresh produce, cheese, and flowers. For larger shops, most families drive to the Esselunga or Coop in Florence, typically combining errands into one or two trips per week. Several farms in the hills sell olive oil, wine, and seasonal vegetables directly.
Fiesole is noticeably cooler than the Florence valley floor, typically 2-4C lower during peak summer heat. The hilltop position catches breezes that the basin below misses, making evenings comfortable when Florence swelters. This was precisely why Florentine nobles built their summer villas here. Gardens and terraces are usable throughout summer. Air conditioning is less necessary than in the city, though the hottest August days can still reach 32-34C.
