Fourways has transformed from quiet farmland to one of Joburg's fastest-growing suburbs in two decades. The construction of new estates, shopping centres, and schools continues at pace, giving the area an energy and forward-looking feel. New residents arrive constantly, making it one of the easier suburbs for newcomers to integrate — everyone is from somewhere else.
The Montecasino complex anchors Fourways' entertainment scene with cinemas, restaurants, a casino, the Montecasino Bird Garden (a favourite with young children), and Teatro — South Africa's largest theatre. The adjacent Piazza hosts seasonal events, markets, and live entertainment. For families, it is the default weekend outing destination.
Fourways sits at the intersection of William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road, with the N1 highway accessible via the Cedar Road interchange. The commute to Sandton CBD takes 20-30 minutes in normal traffic but the morning rush on William Nicol is notorious — 45 minutes or more is common. The planned expansion of road infrastructure has not kept pace with the suburb's growth.
Fourways Mall anchors the grocery scene with Woolworths Food, Pick n Pay, and Checkers under one roof. Cedar Square adds a Spar and specialty shops. The Fourways Farmers Market on Sundays supplements with fresh produce and artisan goods. A growing number of Asian grocery stores along Witkoppen Road cater to the Chinese and Korean communities.
Fourways shares the same subtropical highland climate as the rest of northern Joburg. Summer days reach 25-28C with afternoon thunderstorms, while winter brings dry, sunny days around 18-20C and cold mornings of 3-7C. The northern suburbs tend to be marginally cooler than central Joburg due to higher elevation and less urban heat.
