Lujiazui is Shanghais — and arguably Chinas — most spectacular financial district, occupying the eastern bank of the Huangpu directly across from the historic Bund. The trio of towers — the Shanghai Tower (632m, worlds second tallest), the Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Jin Mao Tower — define the skyline of the worlds most photographed urban panorama. Lujiazui is primarily a business district rather than a residential neighborhood, but a significant community of financial professionals, bank executives, and their families have settled in the high-rise residential towers alongside the commercial skyscrapers. The International Pearl City and Thumb Plaza serve the resident community. Living in Lujiazui means a genuine frontier urban experience.
Lujiazui has less green space than the west-side neighborhoods but compensates with extraordinary waterfront access. The Lujiazui Central Green provides a large park at the heart of the district with Bund views. The Riverside Boulevard along the Huangpu is an excellent running and walking path with epic views of the historic Bund. Shanghai Towers observation deck (level 119) offers the worlds highest 360-degree view. The Century Avenue green corridor extends south toward the Century Park — one of Shanghais largest parks.
Lujiazui is served by Metro Line 2 at Lujiazui station. However, the districts massive scale means much movement within it is by shuttle, bike, or elevated walkway. Didi is essential for cross-district movement. The Bund is 5 minutes by Metro under the river. The Huangpu river ferries provide a scenic alternative crossing. Pudong Airport is 45 minutes by Metro Line 2 or 30 minutes by highway. The financial district has excellent company shuttle services for most major banks.
Daily life in Lujiazui is convenient but high-cost. The IFC Mall, Super Brand Mall, and Thumb Plaza have comprehensive retail, dining, and supermarkets. City Super in IFC is one of Shanghais best international grocers. Medical care at Pudong United Family Hospital and PARKWAY East serves the expat community. School options in Lujiazui itself are limited — most families commute to schools in Minhang or Changning. The concentration of fine dining and rooftop bars in the district is exceptional. The tradeoff is among the highest rents in China.
Lujiazuis waterfront position on the Huangpu means it experiences Shanghais climate with additional river-driven humidity and wind. The skyscraper canyon effect creates wind tunnels in the financial district that make winter feel more bitter and summer more oppressive. Typhoon season (July–September) brings the strongest weather, and the elevated glass towers create dramatic spectacles during storms. The summer heat radiating from the vast concrete and glass plaza areas is severe — the Central Green is a crucial relief zone.
