LEixample is Valencias answer to Barcelonas grid district — wide Modernista boulevards built in the late 19th century that now house the citys professional class alongside a growing international community. Residents include Valencian professionals, European expats working remotely or in local businesses, and families who prize the central location, excellent schools, and walkability. The adjacent Ruzafa sub-district has become a magnet for creative professionals and younger expats.
LEixample borders the Jardín del Turia, the 9-kilometre park built in the former Turia riverbed that is Valencias defining green space. The park contains running and cycling paths, multiple playgrounds, sports courts, rose gardens, and the famous Gulliver playground — a giant Gulliver sculpture that children climb over. The section nearest LEixample includes the Palau de la Música concert venue and a large childrens playground with shade structures.
LEixample is served by the Colón metro station (Lines 3, 5, 7, 9), one of Valencias busiest transport hubs. EMT buses crisscross the district in all directions. The metro connects to the airport in 25 minutes and to the beach in 15. Valencias integrated Móbilis transport card works across metro, bus, and tram, making multi-modal journeys seamless. Service is frequent during the day, with buses every 8-12 minutes on major routes.
Calle Colón is Valencias premier shopping street, with Spanish and international fashion brands, El Corte Inglés department store, and specialty shops. The Mercat de Colón houses gourmet food stalls, artisan bakeries, and a popular horchata stand. Mercadona, Consum, and Aldi supermarkets are distributed throughout the grid. The nearby Mercat Central (in the old town) is one of Europes largest and most beautiful fresh food markets — a 10-minute walk from LEixample.
Summers are hot with temperatures of 30-34C and moderate humidity. LEixamples dense urban blocks can feel warmer than the beachfront, making air conditioning important. The streets become quieter during the afternoon siesta hours (2-5 PM), with life resuming in the cooler evening. Outdoor terraces fill up from 8 PM onward. The beach is a 15-minute escape by bike when the heat becomes oppressive.
