Wahring and Dobling are Viennas most prestigious and sought-after residential districts — the Viennese equivalent of Londons Kensington or Pariss 16th arrondissement. The 18th and 19th districts occupy the Wienerwald foothills north of the city center, encompassing the charming wine village of Grinzing, the Beethoven memorial Heiligenstadt, the Heuriger vineyards of Neustift am Walde, and the diplomatic corridor of the Dobling Hohenstrasse. Viennas international school cluster — Vienna International School in Dobling and the American International School — anchors an established expat family community. The Dobling Grinzing vineyards producing the famous Viennese Gruner Veltliner wine are at the districts northern edge.
Wahring and Dobling have exceptional recreational access. The Wienerwald begins at the districts northern and western edges. The Beethovengang nature trail follows the path Beethoven walked when composing. Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg hills above Grinzing offer outstanding Vienna panorama hiking. The vineyard walks through Neustift am Walde and Grinzing are among the most pleasant in Austria. Nussdorf on the Danube provides waterfront access. The Vienna International School sports facilities serve the community.
Dobling and Wahring are served by the U4 (green line) at Heiligenstadt and the U6 at Wahringer Strasse-Volksoper. Trams run through the district to the Ringstrasse. Buses connect to the vineyard and Wienerwald areas. A car is very useful for reaching Grinzing, Kahlenberg, and the more rural parts of the district. The airport is 30–35 minutes by car or the D-Bahn express tram to Heiligenstadt and then the CAT.
Daily life in Wahring/Dobling has a refined, distinguished character. Upscale supermarkets and specialty shops serve the affluent resident population. The Dobling main square has restaurants, pharmacies, and local services. For larger shopping, the Ringstrassen-Galerien and Donauzentrum are accessible. The Heuriger culture means summer evenings in vineyard gardens are a fixture of social life. The Vienna International Schools active parent community creates a social infrastructure for expat families. Healthcare at the Baumgartner Hohe or private clinics is accessible.
Wahring and Dobling, situated on the Wienerwald slopes, enjoy the freshest and most pleasant air in Vienna. Summer temperatures are 3–5°C cooler than the inner city. The vineyard slopes above Grinzing and Kahlenberg receive slightly more rainfall than the city below. The Danube valley location means cold northwesterly winds can arrive quickly in autumn and winter. Viennas famous autumn Heuriger season is at its best in these northern wine villages.
