The Darmo area (particularly Jl. Darmo and surrounding streets) preserves some of Surabayas finest colonial architecture, including the former Dutch colonial residences that now serve as consulates, private schools, and upscale homes. For expats, Darmo offers a refined urban experience close to the citys cultural institutions.
Darmo has several established parks and recreation options. The Taman Bungkul is one of Surabayas best urban parks — a large public park that won a UN award for best public park in Asia, popular for jogging, cycling, and weekend markets. Surabaya Zoo is nearby. The Masjid Al-Akbar adjacent to the neighborhood has extensive grounds. Several sports clubs serve the areas upper-middle residential community.
