Maksimir is eastern Zagrebs green jewel — a large, residential district best known for Maksimir Park (Zagrebs largest and most historic park), the Zagreb Zoo, and Dinamo Zagrebs legendary Maksimir Stadium. The neighborhood has an established, family-oriented character with a large share of Zagrebs professional class living in spacious apartments around the park. The community is solidly Croatian and comfortable — not an expat hub but a highly liveable, safe neighborhood with excellent green infrastructure. Expats in Zagreb who work at international organizations or for multinational employers often settle in Maksimir for its combination of green space, residential quality, and reasonable prices.
Maksimir Park is the centerpiece — 316 hectares of landscaped gardens, ponds, meadows, and forest covering an enormous area in the heart of the district. The park is free, always open, and provides running, cycling, boating, picnicking, and wildlife observation. Zagreb Zoo is within the park. The Sava river cycling path extends south. Medvednica mountain trails are accessible by tram from Maksimir. Sports clubs and tennis courts serve the active residential community.
Maksimir is well-connected by tram. Tram line 11 and 12 run through the district to the city center in 15–20 minutes. The Maksimir tram stop adjacent to the park is a key transit point. Buses supplement the trams. A car is useful for airport runs (25 minutes) and for weekend trips. The eastern location provides easy access to the Zagreb-Slavonia motorway toward eastern Croatia.
Daily life in Maksimir has a comfortable, established rhythm. The large Konzum and Lidl supermarkets serve the residential population. The Importanne Centar and Arena shopping center are accessible by tram. The restaurant scene has good local konoba options serving Croatian classics. The neighborhoods park proximity means weekend life revolves around outdoor activities — family picnics, jogging, and the zoo. Healthcare at the Clinical Hospital Center Rebro (adjacent to the district) is excellent. Zagrebs overall affordability makes Maksimir a genuinely good value for the quality of life offered.
Maksimir shares Zagrebs continental climate. The large park area creates a meaningful microclimate — summer temperatures within and adjacent to the park are 2–4°C cooler than the city center, and the parks mature forest significantly moderates summer heat. Winter snow in the park is beautiful. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for making full use of the parks recreational potential.
