Podsljeme (meaning "beneath Sljeme") refers to the upscale residential belt on the slopes of Medvednica mountain, just north of the city center. Large family houses with gardens, fresh mountain air, and hiking trails make it Zagreb's most desirable address for affluent locals and diplomats. International school buses serve the area regularly.

Podsljeme is Zagrebs most prestigious and secluded residential area — the northernmost district where the city gives way to Medvednica mountain, and where Zagrebs professional elite, academics, and senior diplomatic community have built their villa homes and estates. The district encompasses the charming village communities of Bliznec, Remete, Sestine, and several others that maintain their rural character while technically falling within Zagrebs city boundaries. The Remete Franciscan monastery is a beautiful landmark. The British International School is based in this area, anchoring an expat family community. Podsljeme offers the rarest combination in Zagreb — genuine mountain proximity, villa-scale housing, and city amenities, all in one of the safest cities in Europe.
Podsljemes entire recreation is effectively Medvednica mountain. The nature parks network of hiking trails starts from residential streets. The Sljeme ski resort is accessible by car or the cable car (when operational). The Medvedgrad medieval fortress is a short hike. Mountain biking trails fan out through the forests. The Adrenalinska suma adventure park on the mountain adds family recreation. The viewpoints above Zagreb from the mountain slopes are among the finest urban panoramas in Central Europe.
Podsljemes position at the mountains edge means a car is effectively essential. Public transport penetrates the area but infrequently. Buses run from the lower city but stop at the base of the mountain neighborhoods. A car is used for all school runs, shopping, and city center trips (20–25 minutes down to the center). The mountain road above the district leads to Sljeme (closed in winter without appropriate conditions). Zagreb Airport is 30 minutes by car.
Daily life in Podsljeme has a refined, semi-rural quality. The local village shops and small markets serve immediate needs, but most larger shopping requires a drive down to the city — the Konzum at Gornji Grad area or the large supermarkets in the city center are 20–25 minutes. The British International School is a community anchor for expat families. Restaurants in the district are mostly traditional Croatian with exceptional konoba serving game dishes, roast lamb, and local wines. The overall lifestyle is the most outdoors-oriented and nature-immersed of any Zagreb district.
Podsljeme experiences Zagrebs climate with a distinct mountain character. Winters are colder and snowier — reliable snow from November or December, and the mountain forest backdrop makes snowfall spectacular. Summer temperatures are 3–5°C cooler than the city below — a significant advantage during heatwaves. The Medvednica forest provides exceptional air quality year-round. Mountain mist is common in autumn mornings, creating atmospheric conditions unique to this district.
